The advice to "sleep when the baby sleeps" sounds simple but can feel impossible. Instead, prioritize rest in any form — lying down, closing your eyes, or simply sitting quietly. Accept help from others so that sleep becomes possible whenever your body needs it most.
Whether you are breastfeeding or not, your body has just done one of the most demanding things it will ever do. Keep water within arm's reach at all times. Herbal teas, broths, and electrolyte drinks are wonderful additions to support your recovery and milk production.
If you showered today, that is a victory. If you fed your baby and kept yourself nourished, that is a triumph. Release the pressure of perfection. The postpartum period is about survival and gentle growth, not performance. Be as kind to yourself as you would be to your best friend.
Feeling tearful in the first two weeks is normal — this is the baby blues. However, if feelings of sadness, anxiety, rage, or detachment persist beyond two weeks or feel overwhelming, please reach out to your care provider or a postpartum specialist. You deserve support and healing.
Identify the people in your life who can bring meals, hold the baby while you shower, or simply sit with you. Prepare a list of tasks people can help with so that when they ask "what can I do?" you have an answer ready. Accepting help is not weakness — it is wisdom.
Your body grew and birthed a human being. It deserves reverence, not criticism. Healing is not linear and recovery looks different for everyone. Focus on what your body can do — nourish, hold, comfort, love — rather than how it looks. You are more powerful than you know.
